Opening responses

††††††††††† I will light a light in the name of the Maker

††††††††††††† A candle is lit

All: ††††††††† Alleluia

†††††††††††††

††††††††††††† I will light a light in the name of the Son
who saved the world, and stretched out his hand to me

††††††††††††† A candle is lit

All: ††††††††† Alleluia

†††††††††††††

††††††††††††† I will light a light in the name of the Spirit
who encompasses the world and blessed my soul with yearning

††††††††††††† A candle is lit

All: ††††††††† Alleluia

All: ††††††† God kindle in my heart within
a flame of love to my neighbour,
to my foe, to my friend, to my kindred all,
from the lowliest thing that lives,
to the Name that is highest of all.

Lamentation

††††††††††††† The Father is always present

All: ††††††††† Forgive us for not reflecting your faithfulness

††††††††††††† The son is always self-giving

All: ††††††††† Forgive us for living for ourselves

††††††††††††† The Spirit is always leading us on

All: ††††††††† Forgive us for holding back

†††††††††††††

Into the daily cycle of our lives
When all seems well
With us and with the world
When our yoke is easy
And the burden light
You break in
And scatter our complacency

Into the daily cycle of our lives
When we are comfortable
And at our ease
When the fire is lit
But eyes are closed
You break in
And challenge our dependency

You break into
Our daily prayers
Humble hearts
Lay souls bare
You break in
You break in

You break in
When defences are down
With an Angel's shout
Or the quietest sound
You break in
You break in

And we change
And all things change
When you break in

Spirit of the crucified and risen Christ
as lamps light up the evening
shine into our hearts and kindle in us
the fire of your love.
Christ is the light of the world.

All: ††††††† A light that no darkness will quench.
Amen

All sing:
Will you come and follow me
If I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know
And never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
Will you let my name be known,
Will you let my life be grown
In you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind
If I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
And never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
Should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
In you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see
If I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free
And never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean,
And do such as this unseen,
And admit to what I mean
In you and you in me?

Will you love the you inside
If I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside
And never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found
To reshape the world around,
Through my sight and touch and sound
In you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true
When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
And never be the same.
In your company I'll go
Where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow
In you and you in me.

Reading: Galatians 4: 4-7

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,  in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ĎAbba! Father!í So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Reading: Luke 1: 46-55

And Mary said,

ĎMy soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.í

Reflection by Revd Alison

All sing:

With Mary let my soul rejoice,
and praise God's holy name -

his saving love from first to last,

from age to age the same!

How strong his arm, how great his power!

the proud he will disown;

the meek and humble he exalts

to share his glorious throne.

The rich our God will send away

and feed the hungry poor;

the arms of love remain outstretched

at mercy's open door.

So shall God's promise be fulfilled,

to Israel firmly made:

a child is born, a Son is given

whose crown will never fade.

All glory to the Father, Son

and Spirit now proclaim.
With Mary let the world rejoice
and praise Godís holy name.

A creed from the Iona Community

It is not true that this world and its inhabitants are doomed to die and be lost; This is true: For God so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him shall not die but have everlasting life.

It is not true that we must accept inhumanity and discrimination, hunger and poverty, death and destruction; This is true: I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

It is not true that violence and hatred shall have the last word, and that war and destruction have come to stay forever; This is true: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given in whom authority will rest and whose name will be prince of peace.

It is not true that we are simply victims of the powers of evil that seek to rule the world; This is true: To me is given all authority in Heaven and on Earth, and lo, I am with you always to the end of the world.

It is not true that we have to wait for those who are specially gifted, who are the prophets of the church, before we can do anything; This is true: I will pour out my spirit on all people, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young people shall see visions, and your old folk shall dream dreams.

It is not true that our dreams for the liberation of humankind, our dreams of justice, of human dignity, of peace, are not meant for this earth and this history; This is true: The hour comes, and it is now, that true worshippers shall worship God in spirit and in truth.

A circle prayer:

Circle us, Lord
Circle us with the light of your presence, bright within this dark world
Enable us to be overcomers of fear and temptation
Enable us to be victors over sin and despair
Enable us to become that which you would desire

Lord of creation, Lord of Salvation
Circle us with the light of your presence

Circle us, Lord
Circle our families and friends within the shelter of your outstretched arms
Protect them in each moment of their daily lives
Protect them in the decisions that they face
Protect their homes and relationships

Lord of creation, Lord of Salvation
Circle our families with the light of your presence

Circle us, Lord
Circle this nation with love and healing
Create a desire to listen to Godís loving word
Create a willingness to understand and respond
Create a need to reach out to Jesus our Saviour

Lord of creation, Lord of Salvation
Circle our nation with the light of your presence

Circle us, Lord
Circle this world with the joy of your Salvation
Where there is sickness and disease bring healing
Where there is hunger and despair bring hope
Where there is torture and oppression bring release

Lord of creation, Lord of Salvation
Circle this world with the light of your presence

The Lordís Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power, and the glory

for ever and ever.

Amen.

All sing:

I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship,
should stoop to love the peoples of the earth,
or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wandírer,
with his mysterious promise of new birth.
But this I know, that he was born of Mary
when Bethl'em's manger was his only home,
and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured,
and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come.

I cannot tell how silently he suffered,
as with his peace he graced this place of tears,
or how his heart upon the cross was broken,
the crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted
and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear
and lifts the burden from the heavy laden;
for yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here.

I cannot tell how he will win the nations,
how he will claim his earthly heritage,
how satisfy the needs and aspirations
of east and west, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory,
and he shall reap the harvest he has sown,
and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour
when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship,
when at his bidding every storm is stilled,
or who can say how great the jubilation
when every heart with love and joy is filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture,
and myriad myriad human voices sing,
and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer,
'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!'

Prayer:

May the guiding hands of God be on my shoulders,

may the presence of the Holy Spirit be on my head,

may the sign of Christ be on my forehead,

may the voice of the Holy Spirit be in my ears,

may the smell of the Holy Spirit be in my nose,

may the sight of the company of heaven be in my eyes,

may the speech of the company of heaven be in my mouth,

may the work of the church of God be in my hands,

may the serving of God and my neighbour be in my feet,

may God make my heart his home,

and may I belong to God, my Father, completely.

Amen

The love of the Risen Christ be with us as we sleep

the love that knows no bounds

the love of grace and joy

bring us to a new day that we can greet as a new birth.

All: ††††††† Deep peace of the setting sun
deep peace of the forgiving heart
deep peace of the loving Christ
be ours tonight and forever.

May our Lord Jesus Christ

be near you to defend you,

within you to refresh you,

around you to preserve you,

before you to guide you,

behind you to justify you,

above you to bless you,

who lives and reigns

with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen
