Celtic Evening Prayer January 2021

I will light a light in the name of the Maker who lit the world,
and breathed the breath of life for me

I will light a light in the name of the Son who saved the world,
and stretched out his hand to me

I will light a light in the name of the Spirit who encompasses the world
and blessed my soul with yearning

The Father is always present
Forgive us for not reflecting your faithfulness

The son is always self-giving
Forgive us for living for ourselves

The Spirit is always leading us on
Forgive us for holding back

O God of new beginnings,
 who brings light out of night’s darkness
and fresh green out of hard winter earth,
there is barren land between us as people and nations this day.
There are empty stretches of soul within us.
Give us eyes to see new dawnings of promise.
Give us ears to hear fresh soundings of birth

Hymn: I Watch the sunrise

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble;

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains tremble in the heart of the sea;

3 Though the waters rage and swell,
and though the mountains quake at the towering seas.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place of the dwelling of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her;
therefore shall she not be removed;
God shall help her at the break of day.

6 The nations are in uproar and the kingdoms are shaken,
but God utters his voice and the earth shall melt away.

7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

8 Come and behold the works of the Lord,
what destruction he has wrought upon the earth.

9 He makes wars to cease in all the world;
he shatters the bow and snaps the spear
and burns the chariots in the fire.

10 ‘Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth.’

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Gospel reading

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
Glory to you O Lord

Matthew chapter 2: v13-23

13 Now after the Magi had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”

16 When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,
    wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
    she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.”

19 When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, 20 “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.” 21 Then Joseph[k] got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. 23 There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, “He will be called a Nazorean.”

Hymn: With Mary let My Soul Rejoice

O God beyond us, lead us forward to pray

O God beside us, teach us gently to pray

O God within us, still our hearts to pray

 A period of intercession

O God beyond us, give us faith
O Christ beside us, give us peace
O Spirit within us, give us life

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.

The love of the Risen Christ be with us as we sleep,
the love that knows no bounds
The love of grace and joy bring us to a new day
that we can greet as a new birth,
a new chance to journey on with our Lord
as he walks beside us.

Gaelic Blessing

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rain fall soft upon your fields.
Until we meet again,
may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
